Comments for Class csc4630

Test post   [Dr_Weeks]   Aug 25, 2016 at 15:08:27
This is a simple system to post questions and comments related to class. If you are enrolled in this class, you can log in with your first name followed by an underscore, then your last initial. Then use your official e-mail address (before the @) as your password. The password will not be displayed. For example, suppose your name is John Doe, and your account name is jdoe4@student.gsu.edu. Then you would log in as "John_D" with a password of "jdoe4".

Does anyone know where to download Matlab for the cheapest from?

Yes, please let me know the best and cheapest way to access matlab on personal computers

MATLAB Online   [Gena_H]   Aug 25, 2016 at 21:41:14
As a GRA I was able to create and activate a MathWorks account for free, which gives me access to their new MATLAB Online product. I just tried it out and was able to do my first programming challenge on my home computer.

More information is here, but it doesn't appear that GSU provides free downloads for students, so this may only be useful for other GTA/GRAs or students who buy the software:

Re: Matlab software   [Dr_Weeks]   Aug 27, 2016 at 13:12:00
There is a student edition, and it should be complete enough for everything we do in class. You may have to have your student ID to buy it, and I don't know if our bookstore has it.

Student Projects   [David_B]   Aug 29, 2016 at 19:42:40
Have any of the grad students picked partners yet? I have a couple ideas for things that could be done for the project, but they'd involve a little research.

Also, student edition of MatLab is $40-$50. Not too bad.

Has anybody downloaded the matlab software? Did you get it with or without the Simulink? I know with Simulink its 99 but without its 49.

Testing/MatLab   [Zane_B]   Aug 30, 2016 at 04:05:20
Test;
I have not downloaded MatLab on a personal rig - but I have experimenting with GNU Octave and will be testing cross software loading (loading a file made with Octave in MatLab and seeing if it runs properly)

Re: Student Projects, Testing/MatLab   [Dr_Weeks]   Aug 30, 2016 at 08:36:39
It's a good idea to start thinking about the semester projects. You will need to make some decisions soon.

Re: Testing/MatLab   [Dr_Weeks]   Aug 30, 2016 at 08:39:58
We should talk about other options in class. There are many possibilities for doing your work at home; you could even use OpenOffice to type up your assignments (though you would not be able to run it). But whatever you do, we should be able to run your programs with MATLAB.

It's the one that I wrote on the board. It's the school's mascot, with the first letter capitalized.

MATLAB Access   [Kyle_B]   Sep 27, 2016 at 13:31:37
Has anyone else had trouble accessing MATLAB either on-campus or remotely through the VCL?

Interesting article   [Desiree_M]   Oct 1, 2016 at 17:21:49
I was working on the project this weekend, and I came across this sad story about how a (minor) coding error in MatLab led to a paper retraction:
http://retractionwatch.com/2015/02/16/matlab-mixup-sinks-journal-neuroscience-paper/

Re: Interesting article   [Dr_Weeks]   Oct 2, 2016 at 09:59:54
That is interesting. It says "...after correcting the mistake in the program Matlab," which makes it sound like the error was MATLAB's fault. But the error comes from the command "abs(hilbert(eegfilt(data,Fs,f1,f2)))", and sounds like this is in from their code.

Re: Interesting article   [Desiree_M]   Oct 2, 2016 at 18:09:21
After reading the comments, it sounds like others were confused about this too. The way I interpreted it, it was their coding error.

I agree.

wavread   [Gena_H]   Oct 7, 2016 at 17:33:27
I am working on the programming challenge and am getting an error that 'wavread' is not a recognized function - this appears to have been changed in the 2015b version. Is using 'audioread' an acceptable alternative?

wavread   [Mechal_T]   Oct 7, 2016 at 21:46:35
I believe wavread was replaced by audioread in version R2013a and up.

Re: wavread   [Dr_Weeks]   Oct 9, 2016 at 12:42:10
You are correct. The "audioread" function replaced "wavread", so that is the best alternative.

[y, fs] = audioread('backwards.wav');

Project Proposal: Peer-Review Papers   [Sidney_S]   Oct 10, 2016 at 16:49:44
What exactly is the source of the peer-review papers?

Re: Project Proposal: Peer-Review Papers   [Dr_Weeks]   Oct 11, 2016 at 12:44:21
Peer-reviewed papers are those that have been read and vetted by other researchers (i.e. peers), and published. Papers from CS conferences and journals are peer-reviewed. Anything by IEEE or ACM is likely to be peer-reviewed.

Error using getncbidata (line 191)
The key M10051 was not found in the nucleotide database at this time.
Check that the input is a valid Accession Number.

Note: This function is dependent on NCBI's Entrez tools and sequence databases. Changes to either may cause this function to break.

Error in getgenbank (line 70)

%I keep getting this error on the hw. It was working fine yesterday. Im guessing they changed the file in the database?

Re: Homework 2   [Dr_Weeks]   Oct 14, 2016 at 09:02:22
I'm glad to hear that it's working again. Do you have any idea why it didn't? If the network went down, that could explain it.

Access error for Image of Homework8   [Ruby_G]   Oct 14, 2016 at 09:34:32
I am getting access error while accessing the image file of HW8.
"Forbidden

PC 8 Error   [Kyle_B]   Oct 14, 2016 at 10:08:29
Ruby, I'm having the same issue

Re: Access error for Image of Homework8   [Dr_Weeks]   Oct 15, 2016 at 09:07:41
Sorry about that. I fixed the permissions.

By the way, the image is a 400x magnification of yeast (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae). I suspect that it shows Lactobacillus, too. If anyone happens to study Biology and can confirm this, let me know.

Issue with Programming Challenge #8   [Caroline_J]   Oct 16, 2016 at 17:08:53
When I used the partial solution given in the problem, the cropped image was in black and white. I was able to resolve this by adding a third parameter as a colon to pick up the RGB values, so this: y = x(r1:r2, c1:c2); became this: y = x(r1:r2, c1:c2, :);

Re: Issue with Programming Challenge #8   [Dr_Weeks]   Oct 17, 2016 at 08:01:58
Good point. I meant to make the image grey-scale. As you note,
y = x(r1:r2, c1:c2, :);
is a better solution.

I think it's OK if people do not include the Green and Blue planes, i.e. it's also OK to use
y = x(r1:r2, c1:c2);

Article summary   [Diego_F]   Oct 21, 2016 at 09:46:33
Do any of the graduate students know if for the article for our article summary, the article has to include the code that the researchers used to run their analysis? Or is alright if they did not include their code, but they discussed what they did using Matlab?

re Article Summary   [Desiree_M]   Oct 22, 2016 at 11:02:36
The way I read it was that we just had to discuss how MatLab was used, but I could be wrong and Dr. Weeks will probably see this and clarify. I am not sure how standard it is to include code, especially for non-CS type journals, but maybe the intention would be to drive us towards having to use a particular type of research study if we do need the code.

PC9   [Achmad_B]   Oct 23, 2016 at 10:58:46
Just a heads up, the pc9 and HMWK3 use functions found in the "image processing toolbox" so if you have the student version, you may not have this toolbox!

Re: Article summary   [Dr_Weeks]   Oct 23, 2016 at 10:59:50
Diego - you do not have to include code. The papers should be related to MATLAB somehow, so if they discuss how they used MATLAB, that would be fine.

Most papers will not include code unless it is a small subset that illustrates a point.

Re: PC9   [Dr_Weeks]   Oct 23, 2016 at 11:02:42
Achmad - the student version should contain image processing functions, though there may be some things that are not included. If you find that a function does not work with the student edition, please let me know which one it is.

PC9   [Sidney_S]   Oct 25, 2016 at 10:16:18
I contacted GSU IIT, and they said they did not know if I could get the toolbox or not.

Re: PC9   [Dr_Weeks]   Oct 26, 2016 at 10:39:50
Is it a problem for "image", "imshow", "imread", "imwrite", or "im2bw"?

All GSU computers should have all toolboxes. If you cannot get this to work with the student edition, try it on an on-campus computer.
